A Critique of the Critics

So Rhianna and Amy Winehouse are revolutionary. And someone who listens to music for a living just doesn't get Animal Collective. And a legendary critic who's been around since Lester Bangs is content to list Britney Spears' "comeback" as the number two song of the year. (I'm hoping he's not too old to be ironic.)
It's frustrating that "famed" "rock critics" who have a platform to influence music consumers refuse to venture outside of the top forty. Although Christgau himself says, "I just think it could be more fun for people, whatever their day-job constrictions, if they'd open up a little more, and more interesting if they had a somewhat sharper and more aggressive critique of the constrictions," in reference to Feist's "wine bar music" (which I agree is only good for fueling yuppie delusions, or a nap.)

And now the opinion of someone who never got her MFA in pop criticism:
Strawberry Jam, Animal Collective
Kala, M.I.A.
Person Pitch, Panda Bear
I'm Not There soundtrack (for the Charlotte Gainsbourg track alone)
With Lasers, Bonde du Role
Alive 2007, Daft Punk
