In 2010, it's hard to think of two more useless things than sports and nationalism, and the Olympics are a barely disguised corporate-sponsored excersise in pitting arbitrarily defined entities against one another when we should be coming together as a globe (if this sounds ridiculous, read some comments on articles about the Olympics).
That having been said, Lindsey Vonn's gold after working her entire life for it and sustaining an injury right before the Olympics was pretty amazing. Watching the gold medal hockey game, I was forced to forget about the ads plastering the rink and realize that those players are the best in the world at their very specialized set of skills, and that's kind of cool.
But I'm not to be trusted as I nearly cried during a Morgan Freeman-voiced Visa commercial about Korean ice skaters.
